The Quakers

Our free religion

Pennsylvania was a model of religious liberty in the Middle Colonies, with a variety of religious groups practicing freely without an established church. Colonists were free to practice their own religion as long as they believed in "the one Almighty and eternal God". The Quakers, who founded Pennsylvania,  were the most influential religious group in the colony. Other religious groups in Pennslylvania included the Amish, Memonites, Catholics, Luthereans, and Jews. The large congregations of German Reformed and Presbyterians were also influential at that time.  Pennsylvania became a haven for minority religious sects from across Europe. making it the most culturally diverse from all the colonies.
