Middle Colonies

Our abundant geography

Pennsylvania was located in the Middle Colonies. Portions of the territory were claimed by Connecticut, Virginia, and Maryland, which led to border disputes between the colonies. The terrain varied from coastal plains to mountain regions. The land featured rich and tillable soil, which was exceptional for agriculture and subsistence farming. It allowed the colony to produce corn, flax, wheat, and other grains. Pennsylvania had a mild climate, summers were warm and humid, and winters were cold. Its geography was also influenced by the Appalachian Mountains, which run diagonally from southwest to northeast across the state.
